Director Makoto Shinkai has revealed more information about his next anime movie, Tenki no Ko: Weathering With You. It will come out in Japanese cinemas on 19 July 2019 and will be Shinkai’s first release in three years since August 2016’s Your Name (Kimi no Na wa).

Masayoshi Tanaka, who was also the character designer for Your Name, will produce the character designs. The animation director will be Atsushi Tamura (The Cat Returns, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin) and the art director will be Hiroshi Takiguchi (The Garden of Words). Members of the voice cast have also been revealed. Kotaro Daigo (Sakamichi Onoda in the Yowamushi Pedal stage play) and Nana Mori (Hell Girl and Last Letter) were cast through an audition.

Tenki no Ko is a story about boys and girls in a time when the weather goes crazy. They have to choose how they want to live their lives after fate turns everything upside down. Daigo will voice the high school student Hodaka Morishima, who runs away from his home on a detached island and comes to Tokyo. In Tokyo he meets a strange girl called Hina Amano (voiced by Mori), who carries a strange power that allows her to make the sky clear up by ‘praying’.
